UNDERSTANDING CATARACTS

What Is a Cataract?

A cataract is a clouding of the eye’s natural lens. This clouding can make vision appear blurry, hazy or less colorful and can make it more difficult to see at night.

Cataracts typically develop gradually and may eventually begin to interfere with everyday activities.

Common Signs of Cataracts

✓   Gradual blurriness or hazy vision

✓   Increased glare while driving at night

✓   Halos around lights

✓   Reduced contrast

✓   Colors appearing dull or yellowish

YOUR CATARACT EVALUATION

Comprehensive Testing & Personalized Guidance

A comprehensive eye examination allows Dr. Shah to evaluate the severity of your cataracts, assess your overall eye health and determine how cataracts may be affecting your vision.

Your evaluation also provides an opportunity to discuss how your vision affects activities such as driving, reading, computer use and other parts of your daily life.

When cataract surgery becomes appropriate, we can coordinate your care with a trusted ophthalmic surgeon.

COORDINATED CATARACT CARE

Your Collaborative Care Journey

We coordinate with ophthalmic surgeons to make your treatment and recovery convenient, comfortable and close to home.

1

Evaluation &
Referral

Through a comprehensive dilated exam, Dr. Shah assesses cataract severity, evaluates your eye health and coordinates a referral when surgery is appropriate.

2

Your surgeon will discuss available surgical and replacement-lens options based on your eye health, visual needs and lifestyle.

3

Local Post-Op
Care

Following surgery, Dr. Shah can provide local follow-up care while communicating with your surgeon and monitoring your recovery.

ADVANCED CATARACT CARE

Light Adjustable Lens (LAL) & LDD Technology

Conventional intraocular lenses require your prescription to be selected before surgery. With Light Adjustable Lens (LAL) technology, vision can be customized after the eye has healed.

Dr. Shah has experience with pre- and post-operative cataract management, including the Light Delivery Device (LDD) protocol.

Following surgery and healing, you return to our clinic for brief UV light treatments using the in-office Light Delivery Device. The lens is adjusted based on your post-surgical vision before the prescription is permanently locked in place.
Options may include monofocal lenses, multifocal or extended depth of focus (EDOF) lenses, and customizable light-adjustable implants. Your surgeon and Dr. Shah can help you understand the options available for your visual needs.
Co-management allows much of your follow-up care to take place close to home. Through communication between our office and your ophthalmic surgeon, your recovery can be monitored locally while maintaining continuity with your surgical team.

LIFE AFTER CATARACT SURGERY

Ongoing Care, Close to Home

After cataract surgery, we provide local post-operative care to monitor your healing and vision. Our team works with your surgeon to support your recovery and address questions you may have along the way.

Cataract surgery is designed to restore clearer vision by replacing the eye’s cloudy natural lens with an artificial intraocular lens.

Our goal is to make the entire process—from evaluation through post-operative care—as comfortable and convenient as possible.
